Literature and Music

The Heart of England has countless places of interest for lovers of music and literature.

The region’s hills inspired the music of Elgar and the poetry of Housman. Hubert Parry, composer of England’s favourite hymn, Jerusalem, lived within sight of Gloucester cathedral’s mighty tower. Nearby Cheltenham was the birthplace of composer Gustav Holst, best known for The Planets Suite.

Lewis Carroll, the author of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was an academic at Oxford and the timeless college surroundings inspired many of his fantastical characters.  Visitors can seek out landmarks of Tolkien’s Middle Earth near his Birmingham home –and where else to walk in the footsteps of Shakespeare than in his home town of Stratford-upon-Avon.
